As most of you know, I was diagnosed with stage IIIA breast cancer in 2021. I went through 4 months of chemo, 6 weeks of radiation, 9 surgeries, 2 years of targeted therapy, and am currently in year 4 of 10 of endocrine therapy....all while working and parenting. What many of you don't know is that "survivorship" - the time after active treatment - is often very difficult as well. During active treatment, everyone is cheering you on and all you can focus on is getting through treatment. Afterwards, you're relieved, of course, but you are surrounded by the idea that you're all better now. But you feel the most beat-down and broken when it's over. You're standing there looking at the war-torn ruins of your body while everyone is cheering, but you're the one who still has to rebuild. I've tried to find community with other survivors. I was able to attend the Young Survival Coalition in spring of 2025, which really made me realize how important it is for me to continue to work on the emotional rebuilding among other survivors. Fortunately, I was also recently approved to attend a True North Trek this summer in Michigan. True North Treks' mission is to help cancer survivors "find direction through connection" by connecting with nature, connecting with peers, and connecting with oneself. Travel and retreat expenses are taken care of for me, but they ask that we help fundraise to pay it forward for others.
