This fall, I had the opportunity to join True North Treks for a canoe trip along the Green River in Utah. It feels especially meaningful because before cancer being active was such a huge part of my life. I grew up playing almost every sport, played volleyball through college and beyond, and even went on to become a personal trainer and teach group fitness classes. Movement has always been how I’ve connected with myself and others. It’s not just about physical strength for me, it’s also how I reset my mind, manage stress, and support my mental health, all of which are even more important after going through cancer treatment. Being able to return to movement now feels like reclaiming a piece of myself.

During treatment, I had to slow down. I learned to really listen to my body and honor its limits. Now, about a year out from treatment, I'm finally starting to feel strong again and a little more like myself. 

I first heard about True North Treks from a nurse at Northwestern, and right away I knew it was something I wanted to do when I was ready. True North Treks is a nonprofit that supports teens, young adults, and caregivers affected by cancer to “find direction through connection.” Their treks give survivors like me the chance to heal, reflect, and grow while surrounded by nature and community.

What makes them even more special is their Pay It Forward model: it’s free for participants to attend, but each person commits to raising funds so others can experience it too. I’ve pledged to raise $1,200 to help future survivors and caregivers find strength and hope on their own trek.
